1960s CLOSED TOP BUSES

1960s traditional 69 seat closed top buses

The standard Southdown double deck bus of the 1960s were Leyland Titans built with Northern Counties bodies. We have preserved 2 vehicles from this period. Bus number 954 was built in 1964 to a style little changed from the late 1950s. Only 3 years later in 1967, and sister bus 350 sported large ‘Panoramic’ side windows and a curved-glass front.

Whilst the external details are subtly different, the basic internal layout and design is the same. With 69 seats, (39 upper deck & 30 lower deck), these fine vehicles are a firm favourite with groups and larger wedding parties. Both buses are now truly unique, as they are the last surviving examples of this vehicle type which are still available for hire to the public.

Royal Mail Commemorative Stamp Issue.

In May 2001, the advanced design of our 1967 double-deck Leyland 'Panoramic'' bus was recognised by The Royal Mail with the issue of a special set of commemorative stamps.

Featuring UK double deck buses through various decades, Royal Mail were keen to include our bus 350 regarding it as being a fine example of 1960s design. It was one of only 16 vehicles chosen from across the UK which were shown ‘lined up’ over 5 stamps.
