Winter works 2007/8. 1964 Open-top Leyland Titan PD3, number 406. This bus, the first in our collection, was bought by us back in 1988 from its original owner, the Southdown bus company. At the time, the floor covering on the top deck dated from 1964 and had been patched a considerable number of times over the years. Obviously, the floor needs to be water-tight to prevent rain damage, so this original linoleum was stripped out and replaced in 1990. |

It is this 1990 covering which is now being renewed, due to showing signs of becoming porous. After the close of the operating season at the end of September 2007, the seats were removed and the old linoleum taken up. Minor repairs were made to the wooden floor, which is still in remarkably good condition even after 44 years. The curved aluminium cove panels have been renewed and all of the floor treads checked and cleaned. Once the weather became warmer, the new lino was laid with special water-resistant glue. Reinstatement of seating, partitions and floor treads quickly followed and the bus successfully re-entered service in time for the Epsom Derby festival at the beginning of June 2008.
