Vehicle restoration behind the scenes – page 1

Winter works 2007/8

1967 double-deck Leyland Titan bus, number 350.

Originally new to the Southdown bus company, this unique vehicle, (now the only one of its type still available for hire), was bought by us early in 1993 and has continued to be restored to its former glory ever since. Launched into revenue service in 2000, bus 350 has not only proved extremely reliable but very popular with hirers and passengers alike.

As part of the vehicle's ongoing restoration and improvement, the decision was taken during the 2007/8 winter period to upgrade the rear-most part of the chassis and lower saloon floor. Work has focused upon ensuring the chassis will remain fit for many years to come, installing new and refurbished frame-work around the rear wheel arches, fitting a brand new floor and laying pristine 'Treadmaster' floor covering. Work is now complete and the vehicle re-entered service in April 2008.

Improvements to the rear chassis frame can be seen here.

View to rear: In order to gain access to the relevant areas the floor was removed so that the work could be carried out.

New steel and aluminium frame-work has been constructed around the rear wheel-arches, replacing 40 year old material.
